材料是人们用以制造有用物件的物质。材料的获得、质量的改进和使之成为人们可以利用的构件或器件都离不开生产工艺和制备技术。尽管人类利用材料的历史悠久，但研究材料的学科真正成为科学仅是近半个世纪以来的事。材料科学与工程是关于材料组成、结构、制备工艺与其性能及其使用过程之间相互关系的知识开发和应用的科学。材料科学是多学科交叉的新兴领域，材料科学与工程密切相关，且有很强的应用目的。我们愿借本书出版的机会，使材料科学与工程这门新兴的科学技术为更多的人们所了解，也会有更多的人能满怀热情地关…… （Material is the substance or substances of which a thing is made or composed. Obtaining, improving and transforming material into applicable components and tools require production techniques and technologies. Though humans have long learned to use material, it was only 50 years ago that material really became a discipline. Material science and engineering involves the exploration and application of the component, structure, production technique, properties and their interrelationship of materials. It is an emerging interdisciplinary field, closely related to engineering and oriented to application.
