Frederick delivers a poignant, insightful tale about interracial adoption and finding one’s roots in her second story about Iowa-raised Korean adoptee Hara Wilson. It picks up where Heart and Seoul left off, with Hara in Seoul working for the IF Group—of which her birth mother, Choi Wansu, is CEO—to help the company save face after the scandalous reveal that Wansu abandoned Hara to be raised in the U.S. Hara strives to acclimate to her new life in South Korea, but the language and cultural differences prove to be barriers. One bright spot is the man she’s fallen for—charismatic and loving Choi Yujun—but, because he’s technically Hara’s stepbrother, their romance is forbidden and Korean society ostracizes them for their relationship. Now Hara must fight for both acceptance and love. While reading the first installment provides additional emotional shading, this can easily be read as a standalone given Frederick’s skillful plotting and deeply felt characters. Frederick, herself a Korean adoptee raised in Iowa, brings gravitas and realism to this sensitive tale that will captivate readers. Agent: Steven Axelrod, the Axelrod Agency. -

Frederick's sequel to Heart and Seoul is a lovely, warm, and satisfying romance. At 25 years old, Hara Wilson, a Korean American adoptee, has decided she's ready to meet her birth mother. Visiting Korea creates a new set of challenges for Hara, who must learn to navigate a new language and culture when she lands a job at her birth mother's company in Seoul. Choi Yujun, Hara's stepbrother, is the first person she meets upon her arrival in Korea, and she's instantly smitten with him. It's a romantic dilemma that causes Hara to question her deepest-held beliefs about identity, family, love, and fate. Greta Jung's narration of the Frederick's contemporary romance matches the liveliness of the plot. VERDICT A fun romp whose adroit audiobook narration only adds to the pleasure.--Pam Kingsbury

Greta Jung narrates the story of a transcultural adoptee who has returned to Korea to search for answers, love, and happiness. Hara Wilson, an American, has been in Seoul for a few months, trying to fit in, but it's proving difficult. Jung captures Hara's complex emotions toward her birth mother, whom she has only recently met, along with the anxiety and frustration that can occur when living in an unfamiliar culture. When the man Hara has fallen in love with is deemed unsuitable in Korean culture, Jung proves adept at expressing Hara's struggles with a new set of mores. Jung's narration occasionally lacks emotional depth, making her delivery seem flat, but it is serviceable. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine
