This sci-fi mythological epic tugs at the heartstrings of readers, particularly those who happen to be parents. It’s the first standalone spin-off in the Divinity saga—featuring two former Russian cosmonauts, Abram and Myshka, transformed into superbeings. When Abram and Myshka’s child is kidnapped to replace the murdered Observer, a mythic figure, it sets off a series of events that are equal parts cosmic and personal. Writer Kindt (Dept. H) brings intellectual and emotional depth, and the art team (penciler Hairsine, inker Ryan Winn, and colorist David Baron) creates ethereal, gorgeous worlds. In stunning scenes, like the reveal that the God Platform (a cosmic watchtower of sorts) is being held up by massive hands in space, the artists create a sense of awe rarely seen in standard tights-and-flights comics. While many parents probably feel that their “child is literally the glue that holds our universe together,” the truth of that statement, as proclaimed by an acolyte of the God Platform, proves nearly impossible to bear for Abram and Myshka. This is a bittersweet, engrossing story about how, even for superhumans with almost incomprehensible power,
parenthood is terrifying and it should hold up well for readers new to the series.
