中国小说是历史地发展的，体制不断变化，题材不断更新，范围不断扩展，门类不断增多。简单说来，古代小说可以分为文言小说和白话小说两大体系。前贤多把古代的白话小说称为"通俗小说"，可能是孙楷第先生《中国通俗小说书目》的巨大影响所奠定的，大概是为了与"五四"以后的白话小说相区别。但"通俗小说"与"文言小说"不能构成相应的两分法，在逻辑上不是统一的分类概念。作者在许多场合曾试用古体小说和近体小说的名称来对举古代的文言小说和白话小说，得到了不少同道的认可。这里就近体小说的发展谈一点个人的体会。
