Caedmon was flung from the 20th century into the 11th century where he lived for years. Since his untimely return to the 20th century, he has become cynical and withdrawn, grieving for his family from the past—seeking closure.
Rita has been neglected or used for most of her life, first with her alcoholic, spendthrift father, then an abusive ex-husband. Her recent experiences with new friends have given her hope that loving relationships do exist, but she will have to learn to trust again to find that happiness.
