O'Brien O'Donnell, a prominent, early 20th-century Ohio judge, provides the basis for this intense historical. Just as his post comes up for reelection, Judge O'Donnell receives a three-pronged blackmail threat that leads to a mental breakdown. Public exposure of his hasty because-she's-pregnant marriage, his alleged laudanum abuse, and his role in the alleged cover-up of an "accidental" drowning could ruin his chances. O'Donnell's trusted friend Sarah, with help from reporter Mitchell, incurs risk herself but ultimately saves the day. A sedate narrative, a sometimes quaint tone, and ample descriptions of place flesh out the believable plot. For larger and regional collections.
