In the fifth book of the series that the Globe and Mail calls "terrific," Lane Winslow investigates the murder of an unidentified man she found adrift in a boat near King's Cove.

Lane Winslow is enjoying a perfect, sunny day at the lake when she spots a gravely injured young man drifting in a sinking rowboat. Hypothermic, bleeding, and soaked in icy, bloody water, he is unable to speak, leaving Lane at a loss. What series of events brought him to this grisly fate?

Darling and Ames are quick to pick up the case, but leads are few until Angela's young son finds an unsettling clue on the beach—a bright red swastika lapel pin—that points to the National Unity Party of Canada. When the anonymous man succumbs to his injuries, Darling and Lane are thrown headlong into a murder investigation with ties to the old country.

Fans of Maisie Dobbs, Bess Crawford, and the ever-popular Kopp Sisters will be enchanted by Lane Winslow, a clever, no-nonsense sleuth based on the author's own mother, who was a wartime spy.

Whishaw’s intricately plotted fifth Lane Winslow mystery (after It Begins in Betrayal) opens with a bang. On the night of July 18, 1947, an unidentified man in a rowboat on a lake in Nelson, British Columbia, is wounded by a gunshot. The next day, Lane Winslow, who has a habit of finding bodies, is fishing with friends when they spot a drifting boat. Inside is a barely alive man who whispers, “Let me die.” They bring the man to shore, and Lane phones Inspector Darling, “the man she loved,” and asks him to send an ambulance to the wharf. That same day, a distraught mother calls the police to report that her 20-year-old son has failed to come home. The two cases overlap as Darling and his colleague Constable Ames try to determine the wounded man’s identity and find the missing son. A large cast and multiple flashbacks to different time periods can make the action hard to follow at times, but in the end Whishaw brings all the narrative threads together for a satisfying finale. Progress in the often fraught personal relationship between Lane and Darling will please series fans.

The course of true love never runs smooth for a police inspector and an independent woman.Inspector Darling has gotten off to a rough start with Lane Winslow, whose private income has allowed her to leave England, where she was a spy during World War II, and live a peaceful, lazy life in British Columbia. Her astuteness has helped Darling solve several murders and rescued him when he's been a suspect himself (It Begins in Betrayal, 2018, etc.). While Darling takes a call from frantic Vanessa Castle, whose grown son is missing, Lane and her friends, fishing on a nearby lake, tow in a boat whose contents include a revolver and a man near death. They think the unknown man is Carl Castle until Vanessa says it's not her son. A little digging reveals that Carl, who'd just lost his job, may have been involved in a neo-Nazi group that's shockingly sprung up from a similar prewar organization. In addition, the area is plagued by a rash of burglaries. Lane and Darling's romance has progressed apace, but his desire to marry unsettles Lane, whose last affair ended badly. While Darling and Constable Ames pursue their investigation, the ever curious Lane tries to befriend Mrs. Castle and borrows a neighbor's boat so she and her friend Angela can explore the lake and determine where the gravely injured man came from. They find a tiny cabin where one K. Lasek has been living. His books indicate that he was a German speaker but no Nazi, and this discovery helps break open a case that may be related to Darling's other investigations without, at first, resolving the complications in their rocky romance. An excellent mystery complemented by an appealingly down-to-earth look at life in postwar Western Canada.
